What is a
DOROTO Print?
Some years
ago my friend and collaborator Heinz Insu Fenkl and I were researching
different ancient printmaking techniques - especially Japanese and Chinese
methods. We can't (won't) go into the details, but in going through some
of the materials that we were able to accumulate, several things came
together that made it possible for us to recreate a long-thought-forgotten
printmaking technique that was referred to, mysteriously, as a "spirit
transfer."
We went with
our hunch, and after a few experiments, we were successful in recreating
this long lost technology. We dubbed it DOROTO, for reasons which must
remain undisclosed.
A few of
the resulting prints you see below. The method is not easy, and for that
reason I've not dabbled in it too much since the early 90s.
Maybe some
day.
